Real de Catorce is an ancient small mining country where you can breathe the old Far West's air.
Nominata Città Magica nel 2001, Real de Catorce si trova nello stato di San Luis Potosí ad un'altezza di 2.750 metri s.l.m., nella Sierra de Catorce, uno dei più alti altipiani del Messico che raggiunge più di 3000 m di altezza.
Fondata nel 1778 in seguito alla scoperta dei primi filoni d'argento, nel 1803 fu dichiarata secondo sito al mondo per la quantità di metallo estratto. Ma come tutto inizia, tutto ha una fine: le vene argentifere si esaurirono, e de Catorce rischiò di trasformarsi in un villaggio fantasma.
Ma grazie alle costruzioni in stile spagnolo, alla vicinanza di luoghi sacri del popolo Huicholes e alla profonda cristianità dei messicani, Real de Catorce ancora oggi è meta di turisti intenzionati a visitare luoghi storici, di viaggiatori alla ricerca di se stessi, di pellegrini che vengono a pregare San Francesco d'Assisi, dando vita a uno scenario che alimenta storie e leggende locali.
Consiglio di visitarla nel periodo che va da metà febbraio a ottobre, evitando il periodo della Settimana Santa - la settimana di Pasqua (molti messicani arrivano in pellegrinaggio), quella di fine luglio, periodo delle vacanze dei messicani e il 4 ottobre, quando migliaia di pellegrini vengono a rendere omaggio a San Francesco d'Assisi.
Il clima è freddo e ventoso, sia di giorno e sopratutto di notte, in inverno le nevicate non mancano.
Quindi, consiglio un abbigliamento pesante e sopratutto scarpe da trekking:
Named Magic Town on 2001, Real de Catorce is located in the state of San Luis Potosí and sits on the side of a mountain at more than 9,000 ft., It is located in the Sierra de Catorce range, one of the highest plateaus in Mexico, where summits may extend over 10,000 feet.
Founded in 1778 following the discovery of the first silver branch, in 1803 it was declared the second site in the world for the quantity of extracted metal. But if everything begins, everything has to end: the silver branches were exhausted, and de Catorce risked becoming a ghost village.
But thanks to the spanish-style constructions, the proximity of sacred places of the Huicholes people and the profound Christianity of the Mexicans, Real de Catorce is still today a destination for tourists whishful to visit historic places, travelers looking for themselves, pilgrims who come to pray to Saint Francis of Assisi, giving life to a scenario that feeds local stories and legends.
Recommend to visit it in the period from mid-February to October, avoiding the period of Holy Week - Easter week (many Mexicans arrive on pilgrimage), at the end of July, Mexican holiday season, and the 4th october, when thousends of pilgrims come to pray to Saint Francis of Assisi,
The weather is cold and windy, during the day and especially at night, in winter there is a lot of snow.
So, I recommend heavy clothing and especially trekking shoes.
Naturalmente, anche per questo viaggio abbiamo usato i bus!!
Da San Luis Potosi abbiamo preso un bus fino a Matehuala, dove abbiamo dormito la notte (Hotel & Restaurant Maria Esther) e la mattina presto, siamo ripartiti per Real de Catorce, sempre con bus.
Da Matehuala a destinazione occorrono circa un 3 ore di viaggio: dalla strada principale Mexico 62 ad un certo punto si svolta a sinistra fino a raggiungere Ogarrio: 25 km circa di strada lastricata di pietre che sale... sale... attraversando piccoli paesi e un fantastico paesaggio desertico.

Real de Catorce non è grande: non ci sono taxi, solo stradine di ciottoli e un continuo sali-scendi... quindi: scarpe comode, e sopratutto sconsiglio trolley o zaini con ruote.
A piedi ci incamminiamo per la strada principale che porta al centro.
Real de Catorce is not big city: there are no taxis, only cobblestone streets and continuous ups and downs ... so: comfortable shoes, and above all I recommend no trolleys or backpacks with wheels.

Negozietti, artigianato locale, ovunque localini dove potersi riscaldare assaggiando un "caldo de pollo" o meglio ancora una "gorditas"... e se poi avete nostalgia di un piatto italiano... beh! c'è anche un ristorante italiano...

Anche a Real de Catorce non può mancare la "piazza", il luogo "social" dei messicani: Plaza Hidalgo, piazza che nell'arco degli anni ha subito miglioramenti e cambiamenti strutturali: al posto della vecchia fontana alimentata da acqua potabile, è stato costruito un chiosco. Attorno alla piazza troviamo numerosi negozi e locali.

Altra piazza che fungeva da centro sociale ed economico è quella dove sorge la Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción, fortemente voluta fin dalla progettazione della città nel 1780, è meta ogni anno di migliaia di devoti a San Francesco d'Assisi.
Di fronte possiamo visitare la Casa de la Moneda, oggi museo, nata alla fine del 1700 per coniare moneta locale.

Eh si... Un altro motivo di richiamo è la pianta del peyote che cresce in zona: molte persone che facevano riferimento a "culture alternative", salivano fino a qua, alla ricerca di quella che i nativi chiamavano "cibo degli dei".
Ma il peyote non deve esser considerato soltanto come fungo allucinogeno e stupefacente: contiene molte proprietà curative (dolori articolari, sciatica, tosse. ecc) e naturalmente anche noi abbiamo voluto provare acquistando una crema...

All'inizio non mi sono soffermata nel descrivere il Tunnel Ogarrio, perché... il ritorno lo abbiamo percorso a piedi... 2,9 km al buio... scoprendone la bellezza, gli angoli di una miniera che non c'è più e che dal bussino non vediamo...

Aspettando il bus di linea che ci riportava a Matehuala, alcuni operai al lavoro mi hanno fatto scoprire che tutti i 25 km di strada acciottolata che porta alla Mexico 62, è stata costruita a mano... un po' come le nostre strade in pavé...
E il nuovo progetto per cui stavano lavorando era quello di prolungare la strada fino a Real de Catorce, passando dalla montagna... all'esterno...
Ed ecco come viene costruita... sasso dopo sasso...
Waiting for the bus backing to Matehuala, some workers at work made me discover that all of the 25 km of cobbled road leading to Mexico 62, was built by hand ... like our pavé streets ...
And the new project they were working on was to extend the road to Real de Catorce, passing the mountain ... outside ...

La nostra visita a Real de Catorce purtroppo è durata poche ore, non abbiamo potuto visitare a cavallo la montagna (Marco era reduce di un incidente che lo ha portato alla frattura del bacino) ma è stata molto intensa e sopratutto ho sentito una energia forte che mi ha dato pace interiore e la consapevolezza che il mio amore verso il Messico era ed è vero e profondo.
Our trip to Real de Catorce unfortunately lasted a few hours, we could not visit the mountain on horseback (Marco was convalescence of an accident that led to his pelvic fracture) but it was very intense and above all I felt a strong energy that it gave me inner peace and the awareness that my love for Mexico was and is true and deep.
