Nel gennaio del 2019, eravamo intenzionati a "girellare" per lo Yucatan, e una della tante tappe era di visitare Las Coloradas, quindi ci decidiamo di organizzare il nostro tour "fai-da-te": mappa alla mano controlliamo dove potevamo soggiornare per almeno una notte per non fare tutto in un giorno (da Playa del Carmen andata e ritorno): ci siamo soffermati su Tizimín... che si trova a pochi km da Rio Lagartos (da dove partono i tour con le lance)... Controlliamo su Booking se ci sono alberghi e... via partiamo!
Una sorpresa ci attende!
In January 2019, we were planning to "wander" around the Yucatan, and one of the many stops was to visit Las Coloradas, so we decided to organize our "do-it-yourself" tour: map in hand, we check where we could stay for at least one night, not to do everything in one day (from Playa del Carmen round trip): we focused on Tizimín ... which is located a few km from Rio Lagartos (from where the tours with the spears depart) ... We check on Booking if there are hotels and ... let's go! A surprise awaits us!
Tizimín, il cui significato nella lingua originale è "Tapiro o Danta" (l'animale sacro e totemico del Dio supremo dei Maya), nota anche con il nome Othe (Città dei re), si trova a nord-est dello Stato dello Yucatan, zona del Messico dove troviamo non soltanto
affascinanti città coloniali (come Valladolid), innumerevoli siti archeologici con le proprie piramidi maya, chilometri e chilometri di spiagge, esiste anche un'area di circa 450.000 ettari ad uso agricolo/zootecnico, di cui Tizimín ne è la "capitale": una zona fertile dove troviamo pascoli con i suoi allevamenti di bestiame, coltivazione di cereali, alberi di legno pregiato (cedro, jabin, tzalam, ecc) e industrie attive di segherie..
Tizimín, whose meaning in the original language is "Tapir or Danta" (the sacred and totemic animal of the supreme Maya's God), also known as Othe (City of kings), is located north-east of the State of Yucatan , area of Mexico where we find not only fascinating colonial cities (such as Valladolid), countless archaeological sites with their own Mayan pyramids, kilometers and kilometers of beaches, there is also an area of about 450,000 hectares for agricultural/zootechnical use, of which Tizimín is the "capital": an area fertile where we find pastures with its cattle ranches, cultivation of cereals, valuable wood trees (cedar, jabin, tzalam, etc.) and active sawmill industries ..
Tizimin è raggiungibile sia con auto (da Mérida prendi l'autostrada verso Valladolid e al km 150 dirigiti verso nord seguendo le indicazioni (anche se sei in Quintana Roo segui le indicazioni per Valladolid), sia con i bus di linea che con i colectivos (da Mérida puoi prendere un taxi colectivo dal centro nella Calle 65 x 52 y 54).
Prima di entrare in città se vieni da Valladolid, puoi assistere ad uno splendido fenomeno: vedere decine di farfalle colorate che ti accompagnano per diversi chilometri. Se vai in inverno, il paesaggio è dipinto in toni ocra ed è di una bellezza incredibile.
Tizimín, (che si trova a circa 200 chilometri a ovest di Cancun - 42 chilometri a sud del porto di Rio Lagartos nel Golfo del Messico - a circa 167 km da Mérida - 89 km dal celebre sito maya di Chichén Itzá) non è la tipica meta turistica, non vedremo mai "Tour a Tizimín"...
Ma questa piccola e tranquilla cittadina offre al turista "fai da te", come siamo noi, alcune attrattive degne di essere viste.
Da poco Tizimín è stata inserita nella lista dei viaggiatori per essere un passaggio "obbligato" verso Las Coloradas e le sue acque rosa.
E proprio perché città di passaggio, non le viene data la dovuta attenzione a livello turistico, ma, essendoci poi stati per 4 giorni, non volevo non condividere quello che questa piccola cittadina ha offerto ai nostri occhi.
Tizimin can be reached both by car (from Mérida take the highway towards Valladolid and at km 150 head north following the signs (even if you are in Quintana Roo follow the signs for Valladolid), both with the line buses and with the colectivos ( from Mérida you can take a collective taxi from the center on Calle 65 x 52 y 54). Before entering the city if you come from Valladolid, you can witness a splendid phenomenon: see dozens of colorful butterflies accompanying you for several kilometers. If you go in winter, the landscape is painted in ocher tones and is of incredible beauty. Tizimín, (which is located about 200 km west of Cancun - 42 km south of the port of Rio Lagartos in the Gulf of Mexico - about 167 km from Mérida - 89 km from the famous Mayan site of Chichén Itzá) is not the typical tourist destination, we will never see "Tour in Tizimín" ... But this small and quiet town offers tourists "do it yourself", like we are, some attractions worthy of being seen. Tizimín has recently been included in the list of travelers for being an "obligatory" passage to Las Coloradas and its pink waters. And precisely because it is a city of passage, it is not given due attention to tourism, but, having been there for 4 days, I did not want to share what this small town has offered to our eyes.
Entrando in città vieni accolto da una tranquillità e pace mai sentita: il sorriso ti nascerà involontario. Gli abitanti sono cordiali e amichevoli e la loro allegria di coinvolge piacevolmente: gente del posto, cowboy e indiani Maya mescolati insieme, formano un'unico "pueblo".
Entering the city you are greeted by a tranquility and peace never felt: the smile will be born involuntarily. The inhabitants are warm and friendly and their joy is pleasantly involved: locals, cowboys and Mayan Indians mixed together, form a single "pueblo".
Essendo abitata principalmente da popolazioni maya vi è molto diffusa la lingua yucateca, conserva ancora le proprie tradizioni, visibili sopratutto nell'abbigliamento femminile.
Being inhabited mainly by Mayan populations, the Yucatec language is widespread, it still retains its traditions, visible above all in women's clothing.
Come ho già detto Tizimín non è il classico luogo turistico, ma comunque si trovano comodi hotel, ristoranti con cucina varia e agenzie di viaggio che promuovono "tour" nei luoghi vicini.
Il centro di Tizimín è un piccolo centro storico con edifici rinascimentali. Ne è un esempio il Tempio e l'ex convento dei SS. Re, fondata nel 1563 dai francescani, una struttura con finestre e porte in ferro battuto e 3 nicchie che si ritiene appartenessero alle statue dei 3 Re Magi,
As I said before, Tizimín is not the classic tourist place, but still there are comfortable hotels, restaurants with varied cuisine and travel agencies that promote "tours" to nearby places. The center of Tizimín is a small historic center with Renaissance buildings. An example is the temple and the former convent of SS. Re, founded in 1563 by the Franciscans, a structure with wrought iron windows and doors and 3 niches believed to belong to the statues of the 3 Magi,
E proprio i Re Magi (Melchiorre, Gaspare e Baldassarre) sono i patroni di Tizimin, la cui devozione è molto forte e i pellegrini arrivano da molto lontano in particolar modo nella due ultime settimane di dicembre fino al 6 gennaio, dove Tizimin si veste a festa per celebrare i loro patroni.
La Feria des Reyes è una festa dove messe, pellegrinaggi, sfilate si alternano a degustazioni lattiero-caseari, concerti, mostre agricole, industriali e commerciali, mostre di bestiame, mariachi per le strade... Una vera Fiesta messicana.
And the Three Kings (Melchiorre, Gaspare and Baldassarre) are the patrons of Tizimin, whose devotion is very strong and pilgrims come from very far, especially in the last two weeks of December until January 6, where Tizimin dresses up for the party to celebrate their patrons. The Feria des Reyes is a festival where masses, pilgrimages, parades alternate with dairy tastings, concerts, agricultural, industrial and commercial exhibitions, livestock exhibitions, mariachis on the streets ... A real Mexican Fiesta.

Ma la cosa più interessante di questa grande festa è la corrida, che si svolge in una "plaza de toros", una arena molto particolare per i nostri occhi, dove assistiamo a spettacoli rupestri adatti a tutti dai bambini ai vecchietti, fino a culminare con la vera corrida.
Ora: sicuramente molti di voi, come me, non "simpatizzano" per la corrida... e giustamente... ma bisogna anche capire che è cultura e tradizione (come da noi è il Palio di Siena o il Calcio in Costume a Firenze)... e per questa ragione che abbiamo il dovere di rispettare.
In ogni caso quello che noi abbiamo assistito è stata una "corrida per ridere", dove anche i bambini sono scesi nell'arena e dove la "dieta" prende un colpo basso: un susseguirsi di venditori che vendono di tutto e di più per soddisfare il proprio stomaco!!
But the most interesting thing about this big Fiesta is the bullfight, which takes place in a "plaza de toros", a very special arena for our eyes, where we see rock shows suitable for everyone from children to old people, until culminating with the real bullfight. Now: surely many of you, like me, do not "sympathize" with bullfighting ... and rightly ... but we must also understand that it is culture and tradition (as we are the Palio di Siena or Calcio in Costume in Florence ) ... and for this reason we have a duty to respect. In any case, what we witnessed was a "bullfight to laugh", where even the children went down to the arena and where the "diet" takes a low blow: a succession of sellers who sell everything and more to satisfy your stomach !!
Ma la cosa incredibile è proprio la struttura di questa arena... una enorme palapa della capacità di circa un migliaio di persone (forse di più), 4 piani compreso il piano terra, di bambu, assi di legno, scale di tronchi e ricoperta di foglie di palma essiccate... non volevamo pensare all'inferno se fosse scoppiato un incendio...
Una struttura che da noi è impensabile, irrealizzabile ma sopratutto vietata!
But the incredible thing is the structure of this arena ... a huge palapa with a capacity of about a thousand people (maybe more), 4 floors including the ground floor, bamboo, wooden planks, log stairs and covered of dried palm leaves ... we didn't want to think about hell if a fire had broken out ... A structure that is unthinkable, unworkable but above all prohibited!
E per questo questa ragione che anche quest'anno siamo ritornati a fine febbraio con un nostro amico, proprio per fargli mirare questo genialità dell'architettura... ma sorpresa! La piazza completamente vuota!! Non ci potevamo credere... parlando poi con alcuni abitanti, ci hanno spiegato che viene costruita in occasione della Feria, ma poi smontata il giorno dopo la chiusura...
Una cosa incredibile dalle nostre parti!!
And for this reason, this year too we returned at the end of February with a friend of ours, just to make him aim for this genius of architecture ... but surprise! The completely empty square !! We could not believe it ... talking to some inhabitants, they explained that it was built on the occasion of the Feria, but then dismantled the day after the closure ... An incredible thing in our land!

Tizimín è anche nota per la produzione di tessuti e prodotti tessili. Per una souvenir molto particolare ti consiglio di acquistare una (o due o tre o... ) "guayabera", camicia o blusa tipica messicana dal design personalizzato e se sei fortunato, magari trovi anche pezzi unici: i prezzi qui sono davvero economici.
Tizimín is also known for the production of fabrics and textile products. For a very particular souvenir, I suggest you buy one (or two or three or ...) "guayabera", a typical Mexican shirt or blouse with a personalized design and if you are lucky, maybe you will also find unique pieces: the prices here are really cheap.
