Un'isola unica nel suo genere, dalle acque cristalline, dalla sabbia bianca... un'isola di pescatori dove non esiste asfalto né auto....

Holbox... un vero e proprio paradiso tropicale situato nella parte settentrionale della penisola dello Yucatán, è un’isola di circa 30 chilometri di lunghezza e poco meno di 2 di larghezza

Si trova dove l’acqua del Golfo del Messico si unisce a quella del Mar dei Caraibi

Fa parte della riserva naturale di Yum Balan (che nella lingua Maya significa "SeÑor Jaguar"), Holbox ("Buco Nero"), nel corso degli anni è riuscita a mantenere la sua identità rimanendo selvaggia ed autentica.

Holbox ... a true tropical paradise located in the northern part of the Yucatán peninsula, is an island about 30 kilometers long and just under 2 wide

It is located where the water of the Gulf of Mexico joins with that of the Caribbean Sea

It is part of the Yum Balan nature reserve (which in the Mayan language means "SeÑor Jaguar"), Holbox ("Black Hole"), over the years has managed to maintain its identity by remaining wild and authentic.

La Isla, non lontana da Cancun e da Playa del Carmen così come ad altre isole bellissime come Isla Mujeres e Cozumel, è il luogo ideale per rilassarsi lontano dalla vita "agitata" delle altre località turistiche della zona.

Come ci arriviamo:

Per raggiungere Holbox bisogna arrivare al piccolo pueblo di Chiquilá dove si prende il traghetto con una delle due compagnie che offrono il servizio: 9 hermanos e Holbox Express. La traversata dura circa 20-25 minuti. Le partenze avvengono ogni giorno dalle 6 di mattina fino alle 21:30, ogni mezz’ora, e durante l’alta stagione ci sono traghetti anche alle 22:30.

Il prezzo si aggira intorno ai 6/7 euro. (140 MXN)

Per arrivare a Chiquilá:

da Cancún: bus della compagnia ADO partono ogni giorno alle 9 del mattino con una durata di circa 3 ore e 10 minuti.

da Playa del Carmen o Tulum: bus della compagnia ADO, con partenza da Tulum alle 8:10 ogni mattina e da Playa ogni giorno alle 09:25.

A proposito di trasferimenti con i bus della ADO... Portatevi a bordo una felpa e indossate pantaloni lunghi... L'escursione termica dall'esterno all'interno è notevole. Hanno un viziaccio: gli autisti tengono l'aria condizionata a "palla"... praticamente si rischia il congelamento!!!

Il periodo più indicato per visitare Holbox è quello che va da maggio a novembre, ma non ci sono "contro-indicazioni" per andarci anche il resto dell'anno: è sempre fantastica.

To reach Holbox you need to get to the small pueblo of Chiquilá where you take the ferry with one of the two companies that offer the service: 9 Hermanos and Holbox Express. The crossing takes about 20-25 minutes. Departures take place every day from 6 am to 9:30 pm, every half hour, and during the high season there are ferries also at 10:30 pm.

Speaking of transfers with ADO buses ... Take a sweatshirt on board and wear long trousers ... The temperature range from outside to inside is remarkable. They have a flaw: the drivers keep the temperature of air conditioning very low... practically you risk freezing !!!

The best time to visit Holbox is from May to November, but there are no "counter-indications" to go there the rest of the year: it is always fantastic.

Scesi dal traghetto, per arrivare al centro del paese, o ve la fate a piedi (un lungo viale non asfaltato vi porta dritti dritti alla piazza centrale), oppure, se già avete prenotato una sistemazione, usufruire dei carritos/taxi... naturalmente... chiedete prima il prezzo!!!

Get off the ferry, to get to the center of the village, or you can do it on foot (a long unpaved road leads you straight to the central square), or, if you have already booked accommodations, take advantage of the carritos/taxis... of course ... ask for the price first!!!

La prima volta che amici mi fecero conoscere questo fantastico luogo, è stato nel 2010, la mia prima volta in Messico... Me ne innamorai... Era quello che cercavo, era quello che la mia anima cercava! Niente smog, niente asfalto, gli abitanti cordiali sempre pronti ad aiutare... Vivere nella natura, sul mare... il tempo scandito dal lavoro dei pescatori e dai ritmi lenti di una piccola isola di questo tipo....

The first time my friends introduced me into this fantastic place, it was in 2010, my first time in Mexico ... I fell in love with it ... It was what I was looking for, it was what my soul was looking for! No smog, no asphalt, the friendly people always ready to help ... Ci sono ritornata nel gennaio del 2019, con la frenesia di rivivere quelle sensazioni di libertà che provai 9 anni fa...

E... beh! Ho provato una grande delusione.

Oggi l'industria del turismo fa da padrona: in seguito all'afflusso di migliaia di turisti che ogni giorno sbarcano sull'isola, dovuto anche al fatto che la costa di Quintana Roo in questi ultimi due anni è stata infestata dal sargazo, quindi molti turisti che arrivano a Cancun o Playa del Carmen o Tulum, si spostano verso questo paradiso per poter godere del mare caraibico,

I "vecchi" pescatori si sono improvvisati albergatori e ristoratori e negozianti... purtroppo, senza il benché minimo professionismo che tali attività richiedono... ma al prezzo di alberghi a 4 stelle... Dove 9 anni fa si pagava 4/5 euro per dormire in una camera decorosa, ora paghi minimo 80 USD a notte in camere che... beh! lasciamo perdere (almeno la mia esperienza è stata negativa al 100%... ma non voglio fare nomi...)

Un aumento improvviso per un luogo, che nel 2010 le strutture alberghiere si contavano sulle dita di due mani, oltre alla disponibilità dei pescatori nell'ospitarti con pochi pesos al giorno, oggi si contano più di 100 alberghi... Dove trovavi chiringuitos per gustare all'ombra di una palma un piatto messicano a base di pesce appena pescato, ora troviamo ristoranti con cucina internazionale con prezzi non proprio bassi; per non parlare poi dell'igiene...

Ma... siamo in Messico, siamo su un isola...

Holbox è un paradiso e questo paradiso deve essere preservato e salvaguardato.

E' cambiata molto, ma se non prenderanno provvedimenti, tanto ancora cambierà... in peggio!

Meditate su questo fattore: un'isola di 1,5 km di larghezza e 30 di lunghezza, una popolazione che non raggiunge i 1.500 abitanti, che nell'alta stagione raggiunge più di 18.000 abitanti... Acqua, luce, rifiuti sono sufficienti per non più di di 2.000 persone...

Conseguenza: le falde acquifere, l'ecosistema e le specie animali hanno e continuano a subire danni catastrofici...

Molti sono gli appelli (anche da parte di stranieri) al fine di sensibilizzare gli "addetti" ai lavori... dove una parte dell'isola non facilmente raggiungibile dai turisti, è una discarica a cielo aperto...

The "old" fishermen have improvised as hoteliers and restaurateurs and shopkeepers ... unfortunately, without the slightest professionalism that such activities require ... but at the price of 4-star hotels ... Where 9 years ago you paid 4/5 euros to sleep in a good room, now pay minimum USD 80 per night in rooms that ... well! forget it (at least my experience was 100% negative ... but I don't want tell names ...)

A sudden increase for a place that in 2010 the hotel structures could be counted on the fingers of two hands, in addition to the availability of the fishermen in the hospitality with a few pesos a day, today there are more than 100 hotels ... where they were "chiringuitos" where to taste in a palm's shade, a Mexican dish made with freshly caught fish, now we find restaurants with international cuisine with not really low prices; not to mention hygiene ...

Holbox is a paradise and, this paradise, must be preserved and safeguarded.

It has changed a lot, but if they do not take action, so much will change ... for the worse!

Meditate on this factor: an island of 1.5 km wide and 30 long, a population that does not reach 1,500 inhabitants, which in the high season reaches more than 18,000 people ... Water, electricity, waste are enough to no more than 2,000 people ...

Consequence: aquifers, the ecosystem and animal species have and continue to suffer catastrophic damage ...

There are many appeals (also from foreigners) in order to sensitize the "workers" to the works ... where a part of the island not easily reachable by tourists, is an open-air dump ...

In ogni caso Holbox rimane un'isola carica di energia positiva, un luogo dove possiamo trascorrere una vacanza in mezzo alla natura... di flora e fauna ce n'è... ed è fantastica... come è incredibile il mare...

Da Punta Cocos a Punta Moskito una lunga passeggiata lungo mare, rigenera la tua anima, il tuo corpo... Incontri ogni tipo di volatili e iguane... e anche se molti lotti sono stati affidati a compagnie alberghiere, gli occhi si "ubriacano" nell'ammirare il mare trasparente, la sabbia bianca e magari qualche magnifica conchiglia, assolutamente da non prendere come ricordo...

Io sono per la caccia... caccia fotografica!!! Il ricordo è quello che la tua macchina immortala... non quello che vuoi rubare al suo ambiente!

Verso Punta Mosquito

Una lunga striscia di sabbia bianchissima, affiora in mezzo al mare quando c'è bassa marea (la marea comunque non è mai molto alta) ed è spettacolare passeggiare con i piedi nell'acqua, con il mare a destra e a sinistra, incontrando pesci e piccole mante, fino ad arrivare all'entrata della zona faunistica di Yum Balam dove si possono osservare i fenicotteri rosa.

Quindi... costume, asciugamano, di una buona protezione solare, acqua da bere e naturalmente di macchina fotografica!!

A long strip of very white sand emerges in the middle of the sea when there is low tide (the tide is never very high anyway) and it is spectacular to walk with your feet in the water, with the sea to the right and to the left, meet with a fish and small mantas, up to the entrance of the Yum Balam wildlife area where you can observe the pink flamingos.

So ... swimsuite, towel, high sun protection, drinking water and, of course, a camera!!

Questa parte dell'isola è anche il paradiso del kit surf... quando le giornate offrono un buon vento il cielo si colora di aquiloni che sfrecciando sulle onde... ed è facile trovarsi in mezzo alle evoluzioni di questi kiters!!

This part of the island is also the kit surfer's paradise... when the days offer a good wind the sky is colored with kites that darting on the waves ... and it is easy to find yourself in the middle of the kiter's evolution!

Questo versante è rimasto selvaggio e sopratutto, e per fortuna dico io, non ha subito per ora l'influenza massiva del turismo.

Negli anni passati Holbox è stata colpita da numerosi cicloni che hanno causato molti danni all'isola, e qui ne incontriamo le macerie, rendendo lo scenario spettrale... ma molto suggestivo...

In the past years Holbox has been hit by numerous cyclones that have caused much damage to the island and here we meet the rubble, making the spectral scenario ... but very suggestive...

Arrivati a Punta Cocos vi trovate di fronte ad una laguna dove, la mattina presto, possiamo incontrare gruppi di fenicotteri rosa, falchi pescatori, aironi, cicogne... e... zanzare!!!!

Quindi... un buon repellente è opportuno portarselo nello zaino!

Arrived in Punta Cocos you find yourself in front of a lagoon where, early in the morning, we can meet groups of pink flamingos, ospreys, herons, storks... and... mosquitoes !!!!

How to move

Questo è un piccolo villaggio totalmente pedonale, dove le strade sono di sabbia e non ci sono macchine, dove ci muoviamo a piedi, in bicicletta o con i carritos (macchinine elettriche che si usano nei campi da golf), che si possono noleggiare o chiamando un "taxi" (naturalmente si deve contrattare il prezzo!!)

This is a small, totally pedestrian village, where the roads are sandy and there are no cars, where we can move by feet, by bicycle or with carritos (electric cars that are used in golf courses), which can be hired or called a "taxi" (of course you have to negotiate the price!!)

Noi abbiamo girato l'isola. arrivando sia a Punta Cocos che a Punta Mosquito sopratutto a piedi... ci piace camminare... non è impossibile!

We travelled in the island to Punta Cocos and to Punta Mosquito especially by feet... we love walking... it's not impossible!

Come in tutti i paesi, cittadine, e grandi città messicane, anche a Holbox la piazza principale, El Parque, è il centro "social" degli abitanti: la chiesa, il campo da basket, il giardino per i bambini...

As in all Mexican towns, cities and large cities, in Holbox the main square, El Parque, is the "social" center of the natives: the church, the basketball court, the garden for children...

Oggi la piazza è circondata da ristoranti, negozi, alberghi, pub... la sera brulica di persone, di bambini, di turisti e di "street food", carretti di venditori ambulanti dove poter gustare

- churros (un dolce fritto tipico e ... godereccio! Spolverizzati con zucchero, i churros sono ideali da inzuppare in una grande tazza colma di cioccolato bollente, ma anche gustati al "cartoccio"... mentre gironzoli per le strade)

- marquesitas (impasto simile a quello delle crepes, cotto sulla piastra e ripieno di nutella, di frutta o anche di formaggio olandese, il famoso queso de bola)

- tamales (tamal significa avvolto... un "involtino" fatto di foglie di pannocchia o avocado, che al suo interno contiene masa (pasta di mais) ripiena di pollo, di verdure... la farcitura varia di regione in regione.... viene cotto al vapore o stufato. Può essere sia salato che dolce);

- elotes (pannocchie da sgranocchiare rigorosamente in strada; un cibo dal sapore unico, e dalla semplicità degli ingredienti utilizzati: pannocchie cotte alla brace condite con lime, sale e peperoncino)

- esquites (chicchi della pannocchia, sgranati e saltati sulla piastra, mescolati con maionese, formaggio e peperoncino chili serviti in un bicchierino con cucchiaino).

- tamales (tamal means wrapped ... a "roll" made of corn cob leaves or avocado, which contains masa (corn paste) filled with chicken, vegetables ... the filling varies from region to region .. .. it is steamed or stewed, it can be either savory or sweet);

- elotes (corn on the cob to rigorously to taste on the street; a food with a unique flavor, and the simplicity of his ingredients used: grilled corn cob seasoned with lime, salt and chilli pepper)

- esquites (grains of corn cob, shelled and sautéed on the plate, mixed with mayonnaise, cheese and chili peppers served in a small glass with a spoon).

I colori degli edifici sono una delizia per i nostri occhi, ma sopratutto i murales, vere e proprie opere d'arte, danno un senso di allegria, ammirazione valorizzando muri nudi o edifici "anonimi"...

The colors of the buildings are a delight for our eyes, but, above all, the murals, real works of art, give a sense of joy, admiration by enhancing meaningless walls or "anonymous" buildings ...

Ovunque troviamo "cartelli" che esortano ad una vita migliore, tranquilla e rispettosa dell'ambiente che ci circonda...

E per finire... il rito serale... accovacciarsi sulla spiaggia e meditare di fronte alla visione del giorno che se ne va... tramonti spettacolari...
